Polokwane – An alleged rapist died after being assaulted and set on fire in a mob justice incident in Mpheni Village, Waterval police said on Sunday.
“According to information, community members apprehended a [man] of unknown age whom they accused of rape,” said Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo.
“They then took him to a house of the local community leader who in turn suggested to them that the police must be called to take matter forward.”
“They refused and took the suspect away, assaulted and set him on fire.”
When the police were called to the scene, the victim was already burnt beyond recognition.
Mojapelo condemned the killing.
“We urge all members of the community to report any criminal activity to the police and refrain from resorting to acts of vigilantism.”
