At about 16:30 at corner Vincent Tshabalala (London Road) and 13th Avenue Alexandra, it is alleged that a victim by the name Mr Rath (35) was driving along London road going in the direction to Sandton.

He stopped his silver/grey BMW, reg (FP 42 YR GP) to a red robot before he could drive on. As he was still waiting for the robot to turn green, he suddenly saw one African male aged around 25 on his driver’s side shouting at him to get out his vehicle.

The victim complied, unbuckling his belt and went out his vehicle.

The suspect took the victim’s cellphone and the victim ran off as the suspect was pointing a firearm at him. Shortly after, the victim heard a gun shot thinking the suspect was shooting at him but when he looked back, he saw suspect down and shot at.

Fortunately, the victim was followed by an off-duty Police Officer who saw what was happening and he immediately drew his gun and shot at the suspect on the lower body.

His firearm was found in his possession and the victim’s car & cellphone were recovered on the scene.

The suspect was taken to Tembisa Hospital under police guard.

All necessary officials were summoned to the scene, a case of attempted car hijacking was opened at the Alexandra Police Station.
