Cape Town: A drag racer and four of his passengers have been arrested following a high speed car chase in Athlone.
Cape Town Traffic Services spokesperson, Maxine Jordaan, says officers attached to the Ghost Squad Unit were conducting a drag racing operation when they spotted a Blue Opel Astra driving along Klipfontein Road with its headlights off.
Jordaan says a high speed chase ensued after the driver of the Opel Astra refused to stop. She says the suspects then drove into a dead end in Eighth Avenue and tried to evade capture by reversing into the oncoming patrol car.
Jordaan says one of the passengers of the Opel Astra then opened fire on the patrol car: “Officers retaliated. No persons were injured during the exchange of fire. The driver of the vehicle and his four occupants ran on foot and tried to evade capture.
The officers arrested the four males, however the female suspect escaped on foot.
Two firearms were recovered on scene, one black and silver 9mm Ruger and ammunition with the serial numbers filed off and a 9mm pellet gun.
Suspects have been charged with attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, possession of an fake firearm, tampering with a firearm’s serial number, reckless/negligent driving and resisting arrest.”
