It’s nice to see that the Western Cape is employing the best people for the job…

On Thursday night, the two city officials were spotted burning rubber on the N7 towards Milnerton by the Cape’s ‘Ghost Squad’ – a unit set up to regulate motoring offences. Surely the petrolhead traffic officer should have seen this coming?

At 11 pm, a Subaru and a Ford ST were pulled over for their erratic driving, and once interrogated by the investigating officer, the woman confessed what her day job was ‘to the immense disappointment’ of her colleague.

The Safety and Security Mayco Member JP Smith made his statement on the issue and was extremely upset that a city official – particularly in their capacities – would be dumb enough to participate in an illegal street race

“An incident like this has the potential to cause serious reputational harm to the City, but also to jeopardise our enforcement efforts. Illegal street racing is extremely dangerous.”

“It is therefore disappointing that the very people who are supposed to protect the public make themselves guilty of this type of behaviour. I also want to reassure the public that the actions of a few do not represent the thousands of dedicated employees within our safety and security services.”

Both drivers are facing suspensions and disciplinary hearings over their reckless actions. We use the term ‘they should know better’ every now and then, but this goes beyond common sense.

These are two people who work for the emergency services. They know the trauma and human cost this behaviour has. If they aren’t willing to adhere to the rules they implement themselves, they are not fit to carry on in this line of work.
