A 26-vehicle pile-up brought traffic to a stop on the N17 highway at Tonk Meter Road Friday afternoon. William Ntladi spokesperson for Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services (DEMS) says they received the call to attend to the accident at 14h40.
“Both west and east bound lanes experienced accidents at the same time, probably because of fields burning along the highway,” he says.
Ntladi says when the DEMS rescue teams arrived on scene, the fields were still burning, with wind blowing smoke across the highway.
“Selection Park and KwaThema rescue crews promptly responded to render medical assistance. One person, a woman, was killed in the accident. “The deceased was trapped in her vehicle and the Jaws of Life had to be used to recover her body from the wreckage,” says Ntladi.
He adds the three injured motorists were treated on scene and transported to the Netcare N17 Hospital for further medical care.
