Johannesburg – A Hawks officer was shot dead, allegedly by his own colleagues, a spokesperson for the crime-fighting unit said on Monday.
Hawks acting on information of alleged drug smuggling tailed two cops stationed at OR Tambo airport on Sunday evening, Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said.
Warrant Officer Colbern Mashego pulled over the two police officers in Boksburg who were driving to OR Tambo International Airport, allegedly with a bag full of drugs.
When Mashego approached the car, a shootout broke out. He was shot dead. One of the two officers apparently committed suicide, Mulaudzi said.
The second officer, a sergeant, fled the scene and was arrested later. A bag containing drugs was seized.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the police officers were driving a marked Ford Ranger. The shooting happened in Jet Park, near Emperor’s Palace casino.
