A early morning hijacking in a Durban suburb went properly wrong for a group of hijackers as they made their getaway. An alert citizen saw the hijacking and followed the suspects as they made their getaway. This hero followed and called the police and gave his exact location during the whole ordeal. Unfortunately, he lost sight of the vehicle in the Pinetown area, but his directions enabled Metro and Saps members to block off escape routes. Metro police dog unit members noticed the vehicle shortly afterward and a chase ensued onto the Hanson Dettmann Highway. Members of the Malvern Saps crime prevention blocked off escape routes. As the vehicle approached the Wiltshire intersection a shootout occurred with the hijackers crashing and rolling their vehicle. Two suspects were arrested with both sustaining serious injuries and one escaped. The hijacked vehicle as well as one unlicensed handgun was recovered.
