Today, the pupils of Pietermaritzburg Girls High School are in uproar. Students are furious after an apparent WhatsApp voice note was shared on social media. In the clip, a girl can clearly be heard using the K word.
“im so offended right now fucking K’s [full word was used] don’t know how to pronounce my name, they’re gonna get it from me on Monday!”
“These flipping K’s not knowing how to spell or pronounce my name.” the girl says in what appears to be two separate recordings
Multiple pupils from the school, past and present, took to social media to share the voice notes as well as the alleged identity of the offender. They report that the white girl became upset after a black pupil did not include the special character on the “e” of “Zoë”.
Some students are also claiming that teachers walked around to the classrooms telling black learners to “calm down” over the incident. Learners claim that a white teacher defended the accused saying “she was just stressed out” The entire school was called for a special meeting on Monday morning, the head of the Governing Body is alleged to have called for students to “stop whining” as “no one will care in 5 years.”
One Facebook user posted the recordings with the following message.
“So Racism still exists
It’s so weird when all we’ve ever heard is , “Our School is diverse etc etc” then you get those that just prove the whole system wrong . Hopefully this doesn’t get swept under the carpet just like everything else does
And hopefully those that are making an awareness of it don’t get victimised as usual .
If you don’t see anything wrong with these two voice notes then you are part of the problem
GHS you BETTER FIX THIS.”
The South African reached out to the school for comment on the specific allegations, at the time of writing we have received no form of reply. The school has, however, released a general statement.
Updates to follow.
