Pretoria – Two of those arrested were allegedly police officers, but this was still being confirmed, Captain Kay Makhubela said.
Seven men, travelling in two vehicles, stopped at the petrol station and waited for the G4S cash van to arrive.
“One of the G4S security guards entered the garage and when he returned with the cash box, one of the suspects pointed a firearm at him.”
The guard handed over the box, got back into his van and pressed a panic button, which triggered an electric shock mechanism in the cash box. The would-be thief dropped the box and a shootout between the guards and the robbers broke out.
One of the robbers was shot dead. His six alleged accomplices fled in a Hyundai. Police used a helicopter to track them down in Atteridgeville, where they were arrested.
Two unlicensed firearms and one R5 rifle were recovered.
