Thirteen people suffered minor to serious injuries after the Toyota Hiace taxi they were travelling in crashed in the parking lot of Shoprite on Ireland Street in Verulam this morning (Monday).
Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene by the public who witnessed the accident and removed the passengers from the mangled wreck. Upon arrival the injured were treated by paramedics from several private ambulance services before being transported to Mahatma Gandhi & Osindisweni Hospital.
It was alleged that the taxi was travelling at high speed down Ireland Street when the brakes on the vehicle failed. In an attempt to slow the vehicle down the driver attempted to turn into Todd Street. The vehicle knocked into the pavement, flew over the metal barrier and landed in the parking lot several metres below road level.
The passengers in the taxi are residents of Phoenix and were travelling to work in Verulam when the accident occurred.
