Businessman Kenny Kunene was reportedly shot at while driving in Waverely, Johannesburg on Tuesday night. News24 reported that Gauteng police confirmed that they were investigating the matter.

It has been reported that a car approached Kunene’s BMW 125i, blocking it, before the occupants started shooting at him and another occupant.

Was the shooting at Kenny Kunene’s car an “attempted hit”?

Probably not. When the story first broke, that’s how it was first reported, but that has since changed to being a “hijacking gone wrong” and police are “investigating”.

However, those into conspiracy theories are drawing the “hit” conclusions based on the fact that Sunday Independent editor,  Steve Motale, was travelling with Kunene.  Kunene told The Citizen that Motale was supposed to have been in the car with him but bodyguards had moved him to a different vehicle.

Kunene accompanied Motale to court on Saturday when Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa brought an urgent application to stop the Sunday Independent from publishing a story about alleged extra-marital affairs. The application was unsuccessful, but Ramaphosa has since denied all those claims, saying he had just one affair many years ago.

The Deputy President further claimed that “state resources” were used to hack his personal e-mails and that those e-mails were “doctored”.

Motale has said he’s been receiving death threats ahead of and since publishing the stories on the weekend. Kunene told The Citizen these threats started being made through phone calls to Motale.
