Pretoria – North West police are investigating a case of murder and housebreaking after a 61-year-old man was overpowered and beaten to death, most likely with a shifting spanner.

A gang of about seven robbers attacked Guillaume Enslin and his wife Marie on their smallholding near Brits around 20:30 on Sunday, Netwerk24 reported on Tuesday.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mpeile Talane said the couple and two tenants had been tied up and threatened with guns.

Enslin was overpowered when he went outside to see why his dogs were making a racket. He was hit over the head with a “hard object”, believed to have been a shifting spanner. He was still alive when he was dragged into the house.

The robbers assaulted Marie. She sustained cuts and bruises.

The attackers then fled in Enslin’s Nissan Navarra, registration number JJV 157 NW, and on a Honda Fireblade motorbike. They stole four cellphones, three laptops, a TV, and several household items.

The two tenants freed themselves and went in search of help, Talane said.

Enslin died on the scene.
