Polokwane – Five people were killed when a Chevrolet bakkie transporting 12 people overturned near Hoedspruit, outside Phalaborwa in Limpopo, on Saturday morning.
Provincial police spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the bakkie was apparently transporting the occupants, all men, home from a local tavern along the R536, next to Zandspruit, at around 3.30 AM on Saturday morning.
The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, collided with a tree and the bakkie overturned.
Five people, including the driver, died at the scene, while another five were critically injured and taken to Tintswalo Hospital in Acornhoek. The two remaining occupants sustained minor injuries and were treated on scene, Ngoepe said.
The identities of the deceased were still unknown at this stage and a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.
