Being in the military comes with a lot of responsibility. While in uniform, service members have to take on a role that is bathed in clear cut character traits including: discipline, perseverance, dedication and commitment. If a service member lacks even one of these traits, then they risk their careers.
While a military member holds certain responsibilities and disciplines while in uniform, we often forget about the mystery that lies behind their military career. Who is the person underneath the uniform?
Thanks to artist Devin Mitchell, we have a chance to get a glimpse into what lies beneath the surface of the uniform worn by all branches of the military. The ASU art student started the project which is called “The Veteran Art Project.” The purpose of the project is to offer a sense of humanity to our sometimes mistaken military members.
The following images portray both sides of the solider…one of him/her in uniform, and the other without, expressing who they are underneath all the exterior.
Chris Watkins, from the United States Navy, stands in uniform on one side of the mirror, as he looks at his true self, the man in the laid back athletic gear.
Sgt. Jovane from the United States Marine Corps shows off her true self, in a feminine form-fitting dress. She still expresses her patriotic side though, with a pair of flag-patterned heels. In uniform, she appears rigid and serious and in her civilian clothing she has a chance to show off her fun-loving side that is free from the restrictions of the military
Sgt. Darren from the United States Marine Corps, certainly has two different sides. Looking rigid and focused in military, Darren has a wild side, free of the military regulation haircut and uniform.
SSgt. Mylee is retired from the Army, but she will always remember the side of her that survived deployments and stressful conditions. She now has the freedom to use her creativity in hair dressing.
United States Navy member, Mikael Thrash shows off his other side in a colorful suit coat, giving off the vibe that he is much more than what he appears to be in his bland military colors.
Jennifer Hope shows off a revealing side, free of the restrictions of the uniform that she wears while on active duty in the Navy.
Jeff Bosley may look like the quintessential Special Forces guy in uniform, but put him in a suit and he looks like he could be a heavy hitter on Wall Street.
It may have been hard to picture some of these service members outside of uniform until now, but this diverse photography collection reveals all the sides to the person and gives us a chance to see them from a different angle. As the saying goes…”Don’t judge a book by its cover.” So, when you see a man or woman in uniform, remember that they aren’t only the hardcore, regimented person and that they also have another side that is often very very different.
