The Tshwane Metro Police have received notices indicating a possible protest / strike by Taxi drivers in Tshwane on Monday 18 September 2017 gathering from different areas in Tshwane such as, Soshanguve, Mabopane, Ga-Rankuwa, Atteridgeville, Mamelodi, Ekangala and Centurion then proceed to the Pretoria CBD.
TMPD would like to indicate that we are aware of this possibility and have received a formal application by the taxi drivers who are associated with DETWUSA union regarding their Plan to march on Monday 18 September 2017.
On the application, they stated that they will march to the Union Buildings on Monday 18 September 2017. They plan to gather at old Putco Depot and march to the Union Buildings to hand over a memorandum.
The Department has held a meeting with DETWUSA on Thursday 14 September 2017 and have not approved the march as they have failed to meet certain gathering act requirements. They then requested to postpone the march until they can be able
to provide all requirements.
A follow- up meeting was held on the same day with the Taxi owners and they have distanced themselves from the planned march and gave assurance that their taxis will be operating as normal on the said day.
Tshwane Metro Police Department would like to assure the Community that, should the planned action proceed, Metro Police officers and other law enforcement agencies are ready to deal with the protest action. The officers will be deployed to all areas that may be possibly affected, any unlawful activity will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly.
