A 15-year-old boy collapsed and died inside his classroom in front of his classmates and teachers.
It is suspected Jaden Arends of Roosendal, Delft suffered a massive and fatal heart attack on Monday just after 9am at Excelsior Secondary in Belhar.
Jaden, who was in Grade 9, apparently had a massive seizure and fell to the ground.
‘They say the teacher thought he was making a joke when his body gave two shakes and he fell to the ground,” says his mom, Thelma Arends.
“They immediately called for help.”
The mother, 38, says she rushed to the school where paramedics fought for 45 minutes to save her son.
“They believe it was a heart attack.”
She says an autopsy will be conducted today to determine the cause of death.
The family is now preparing for his funeral but need assistance as they were not prepared for his sudden death.
“He was a normal child, who hardly saw the inside of a doctor’s surgery.
“He was happy on Monday morning and took a taxi with his friend to the school,” she says.
Thelma says her son served God and was part of the youth group at their Pinkster church.
“He was a happy child who attended church, loved the youth and loved doing things for others.
“He was my eldest child and it feels like a part of me died with him,” she says.
Jessica Shelver, the spokesperson for MEC of Education, Debbie Schäfer, says they have provided counselling for pupils and staff at the school.
