Durban – Seven members of two families lost their lives in Maphumulo when the Toyota Venture they were travelling in lost control on a bridge and submerged in the Mvutshane Dam on Sunday.

IPSS’s Medical Rescue aquatic team, IPSS Rescue officers and SAPS Search and Rescue divers responded to the scene of the incident.

At first, IPSS medical rescue and SAPS Search and Rescue divers found six out of seven family members but hours later, all the bodies of the victims were recovered.

Six of the victims were found inside the vehicle while the seventh was found outside the vehicle.

Paul Herbst, IPSS spokesperson, said the occupants of the vehicle were a 10-month-old baby, three-year-old girl, 14-year-old teenage boy, 17-year-old teenage boy, 18-year-old teenage boy, 31-year-old woman and 34-year-old man.

On Monday morning, Dylan Meyrick, owner of IPSS Security Operations, said, “IPSS Rescue and SAP Search and Rescue are returning to the scene of yesterday’s (Sunday) horrific accident. Divers will be using lift bags to recover the vehicle from the dam for investigation purposes.”
