Police have been deployed to Umlazi Township, south of Durban ahead of the night vigil of a gang leader Sandile Chillies Bhengu who was gunned down during a shootout with the police last week.

Bhengu’s body is expected to arrive in uMlazi this on Friday afternoon. His memorial service which was held at a local hall this week was characterised with spinning of cars, loud dance music and gun wielding.

Police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele says they are not leaving anything to chance.

“There is high visibility operations by the police and other units in uMlazi and surroundings since the death leader in uMlazi and remember this gang leader was killed last week on Wednesday was his memorial service which was taking place in uMlazi sections. We have had fruitful results because one suspect was arrested for unlawful discharge of firearms as well as the possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The same person was appearing in court yesterday (Thursday) and he will be facing the same charges. We also want to assure the community in uMlazi and the surroundings that the police are there and there is maximum deployment to make sure the community is safe and freely,” says Mbhele.
